Andy Bankert is currently leading eight Michigan birders through Florida, arriving at Marathon Airport right about now. I just got off the phone with him, and his group has found some very cool birds. Barn Owls were at their usually haunt south of South Bay, a Smooth-billed Ani at Ft. Lauderdale Aiport, Spot-breasted Oriole and White-winged Parakeets in Miami Shores, and oriole, parakeets, and bulbuls in Kendall. In Everglades National Park, they had two Mangrove Cuckoos fly over the main road just south of Snake Bight at around 8:00. Andy and another young, brave soul donated blood on Snake Bight. A Mangrove Cuckoo was near the entrance. At the end, they had a Clapper Rail, an American Avocet, a good amount of skimmers, White Pelicans, and a Black-whiskered Vireo. Many Swallow-tailed Kites were along the main road. They had a couple Snail Kites a couple miles south of Florida City on US-1, to their surprise. Marathon had Roseate Terns, and the Key West Airport had a Short-eared Owl (!!!) but no nighthawks. They will check out Everglades National Park again tomorrow for White-tailed Kites and Seaside Sparrows.
