Thank God for Carlos Alvarez! It was reported by NBC6 News last night that he vetoed the County Commissioners' approval of the Florida City annexation, saying it was an attempt to start to compromise the Urban Development Boundary.
The Commissioners can still override the Mayor's veto, but it would need to be a majority vote of 9, which is unlikely to happen at this point (or so it's thought).
Sorry to go off-topic, I know this is a bird-sighting board, but I was just really, really concerned about this and it's so hard to get up-to-date information.
I also wonder what the 2 commissioners who led the approval of the Florida City annexation proposal -- Rebeca Sosa and Natacha Seijas -- have to do with it. Seijas' district covers Hialeah and Miami Lakes, Sosa's district is West Miami. It wouldn't surprise me greatly if they are being influenced by certain businesspeople who want to bring industrial development closer to the wellfields in NW Miami.
