Hey everyone,
First post, too long, this will haunt me later I'm sure :). Been stalking here for a while and been birding for about a year. Have met some of you out in parks. Thanks for the help! Hope to go on some of the walks soon.
We were in AD Barnes this morning and saw an olive bird about the size of a cardinal, maybe a little smaller. Darker olive on back and wings, lighter on chest, light (yellowish not black) short thick beak, black eyes, slight crest on the head. No distinguishing marks on head or around eyes other than the crest (like a phoebe) and i didn't notice any wingbars or other colors. I have no clue how to describe the call but it had two beats, one higher, then one lower. Nothing I have heard before.
It was definitely not a female painted bunting, much bigger, however, same colors. I actually thought it was one at first but it was out of place. It was not shy, didn't have a camera, too dark and too far away for phone, I tried. It was located in the northwest side of the park near the boardwalk/wood walkway. It was mostly about 15 to 20 feet off the ground. Had great looks at it!
Other birds we saw this morning included:
Black-throated Blue Warbler
Yellow-rumped Warbler
Palm Warber
Northern Parula
Black-and-white Warbler
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher
Egyptian Goose
Blue Jay
Gray Catbird
European Starling
Northern Cardinal
Common Gallinule
American Coot
American Kestrel
Boat-tailed Grackle
Turkey Vulture
Mourning Dove
Pied-billed Grebe
Red-shouldered Hawk
Coopers Hawk (?? short look and not so good with these yet)
Rock Pigeon
So you can see, know a little, but not enough to identify the tougher ones.... The warblers were all over again this morning.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Jack
