After failing to relocate the Bananaquit for many birders on Saturday we hit the beach for the sunset and to dry off our tears. We had received a call about an injured bird so we figured we would get the bird and give the beach a once over. When we arrived at the location where the injured bird was reported we couldn't believe our eyes, a RED PHALAROPE! We looked out on the water with the notion that maybe more would be out there and there was! A small flock of five birds were loafing just offshore in the color change. An hour earlier these five birds were out further and we could not identify them due to distance and heat shimmer. After getting looks at the birds that were out on the water we hurried back to the park office for a box and transported the bird to our local bird rehab hospital, Pelican Harbor Seabird Station. The bird had a large open wound on its ventral side but seemed pretty strong. Teresa at Pelican Harbor did a great job of cleaning the wound and flushing the ants, but this is when we noticed the extent of the birds injuries. Unfortunately the phalarope succumbed to its injuries and didn't make it through the night.
We were stoked to have seen five birds alive and well and to have added a new county bird to our list! Red Phalarope - Miami-Dade County bird #320!
