Coot Bay CBC Summary

A total of 54,553 individuals of 144 species were tallied during the Coot Bay/Everglades National Park Christmas Bird Count on December 29, 2012. Species of note recorded during the count included a Horned Grebe on Coot Bay Pond, six Black Rails, heard on the Coastal Prairie Trail, a Long-billed Curlew on Florida Bay, two Short-eared Owls, both in coastal prairie, a Blue-winged Warbler, seen on the Bear Lake Trail and a Prothonotary Warbler, seen on Coot Bay. A total of 21 species of warblers were found. Also, new high counts were recorded for Common Loon, Black Rail, Spotted Sandpiper, Marbled Godwit and Short-billed Dowitcher.
