I started my morning of birding today at the end of the Annex near the old fishing platform where I had a Barred Owl perched on a wire. Many Eastern Whip-poor-wills were heard calling nearby, while Limpkin and King Rail sounded off in the distance.

Lucky Hammock itself had an impressive number of Sandhill Cranes fly over first thing in the morning, presumably commuting to the millet fields planted north of 9336. Brown-crested Flycatcher was very active in the hammock proper, calling almost incessantly although a bit shy about spending time on the edge of the hammock where it could be visible. Other birds here included Great Crested Flycatcher, Northern Parula, and Brown Thrasher. Sparrows in the surrounding fields included Savannah, Grasshopper, Swamp, and Lincoln's.

I decided to bird the rarely explored western side of the field, where there is a row of brushy hammock beside the canal that forms the western edge of the Lucky Hammock area. Birds of interest here included multiple Northern Waterthrush (birds seen were all very yellow), a male WILSON'S WARBLER, and a dark morph Short-tailed Hawk.

The Vermilion Flycatcher continues at the pumphouse station, but the kingbirds were nowhere to be seen at around 1030AM.
