The Kendall CBC was held on December 22, 2012. Participants enjoyed great birding weather and a fun day in the field. A total of 141 species were found (a new Count record); we also had 10 species of exotics. In addition, there were 7 Count Week species and 2 Count Week exotics. Another potential Count Week bird, Neotropic Cormorant, is under review. On the minus side, we missed Great Crested Flycatcher and Brown Thrasher on Count Day....
New additions to the Count were Black Scoter, Northern Gannet (CW), King Rail, Sora, Rufous/Allen s Hummingbird, Red-headed Woodpecker, and Blue-winged Warbler (CW),
The 5 most common birds seen were, in order, Laughing Gull, Turkey Vulture, Starling, White Ibis, and Common Grackle. Our overall numbers were comparable to prior counts, although warbler numbers overall were the highest ever for almost every species seen.
We were very pleased to have the participation of the Miami-Dade College Environmental Center (Jake Tucker), The Deering Estate (Chris Sanchez), and Zoo Miami, all of whom made special arrangements to allow birders access to the properties without cost and outside normal operating hours. In particular, I d like to thank Dr. Frank Ridgley and Tedor Whitman at ZooMiami, who not only provided access but enlisted volunteers to count birds both at the Zoo and at neighboring Larry and Penny Thompson Park. On a personal note, thanks, Alex Paez at Zoo Miami for the great day!
My sincere thanks to ALL the participants, whose efforts are always appreciated:
Team Matheson (Jeff Weber, Joe Barros)
