The closest population to Miami is in western Palm Beach County and southeastern Hendry County. Take I-75 west from Weston in Broward County. Then head past the toll booth for (I'd say 15 miles, but that is just an estimate). Eventually, you will see a highway running north and south over I-75. Exit on the right off I-75. You will see a gas station and signs for Billy Country Safari. Head north on this road, which is called Government Road. After a couple miles, you will start seeing good caracara habitat, especially on the right side of the road. They can be seen in the cow pastures to your right, or on the road eating raod kill with Black Vultures. You can find them anywhere along there for about 30 miles. I have never failed to see them along Government Road. Other birds of interest in the area are Sandhill Cranes, Wild Turkey, and the occasional Northern Bobwhite. Most of your birding will be from the car.
