Birders,
I just got back from a four-day family vacation in the Miami area, which meant limited birding but some nice finds for this northerner:
5/30 2 anis at the greenbelt south of the Ft. Lauderdale airport; just as I saw the first one, a cooper's hawk swooped in and tried to take away my life ani--boy did I have mixed feelings about that encounter
5/31 3 black-whiskered vireos at the Key Largo botanical site
6/1 2 limpkins and one great white heron (called by the tram operator and ranger) at Shark Valley; 1 prothonotary warbler and 5 otters and Sweetwater strand in Big Cypress
--1 cuckoo at the Valujet memorial that looked, as it flew away, like mangrove--but wouldn't that be pretty far out of its range?
--2 snail kites at the old airboat concession just west of Shark Valley
6/2 2 yellow-chevroned parakeets at Kendall Avenue (but no other target species in the neighborhood)
--at least 7 burrowing owls at Wings over Miami/Kendall Tamiami airport
--one hell of a visit to the Asian bird aviary at the Metrozoo
Also, frigatebirds every day over the I-195 Causeway--good thing I wasn't driving!
Any thoughts on the likelihood of a mangrove cuckoo near the Valujet memorial would be appreciated.
