Thanks to a great team -- Pat & Lori Hayes, Jan & Dave Conley, Kristen Murtaugh, Sue Young, and myself -- the Barrier Island team on the West Palm Beach Christmas Bird Count circle chocked up a total of 55 species with 2274 individual birds. We divided into two groups -- one with the northern portion of the island from just south of Palm Beach down to the Boynton Inlet and the other with the southern portion of the island from Delray Beach up to the Boynton Inlet.

The day started cold and windy, which kept the count down from what it might otherwise have been.

Highlights for the northern group were: 9 American Oystercatchers at Ibis Isle, a Peregrine Falcon at the Lake Worth Pier, and 5 Black Scoters at the Oceanside Farmers Market in Lake Worth (directly across the Lake Worth Bridge from where they've been hanging out since early November).

The southern group's highlights were: hundreds of Laughing and Ring-billed Gulls, hundreds of Sanderlings, over a hundred Nandy Parakeets, a smattering of Great and Lesser Black-backed Gulls, lots of Osprey, a couple of Common Loons, and a pair of adult Bald Eagles performing a courtship display directly above us at the Ocean Ridge Natural Area.
