This morning Maria Rodriguez and I checked out the west side of Matheson Hammock. Both the adult and young Red-headed Woodpeckers were present. At 9:35 and again at 10:02 AM we heard the distinct nasal "peent" of a Common Nighthawk. At the time it was very overcast and the sound was clear and fairly close. The vocalization came from the grassy area directly west of the State Trooper's house. Though it's a very rare wintering bird, there was no doubt in our minds that it's what we heard. Giovanni Pari photographed a silent nighthawk during the Long Pine Key CBC that is probably a Common, though technically, Antillean can't be ruled out.
