Folks, today I spotted one White-rumped Sandpiper at the Homestead Racetrack ag-fields...right on cue. Since several years ago, when these fields became popular birding areas, the White-rumped Sandpipers start showing up around the 30th of May and may be seen throughout until about the 2nd of June or so. They may show up in large flock (100+) or just a few individuals. Those of yo who have been around a bit need not be reminded that other goodies may show up at this particular time, such as Baird's and Buff-breasted Sandpipers. And for those of you who didn't know: I'm telling you now. The summer doldrums are upon us but this small window of time can provide a bit of excitement in an otherwise stagnate month of June. The rainy season's knocking at the door so go out looking for rain puddles and arm yourselves with a spotting scope, three field guides, sunblock, lots of drinking water, and lots of patience. Although this is only a prelude to the shorebird invasion of late July, a sort of tease, but these particular birds I mentioned may not be seen then or later in the year for that matter. Now's the time to go out and look for them. We'll deal with Ruff and Phalarope later this summer.
Remember, roughly 46 species of shorebird can be seen in Florida at one time or another.
How many have you seen?

Cheers and get out there,
RJ
