I was unable to help with the Coot Bay CBC today (12/29) but managed a seawatch from 7:05-8:25 AM. The recent Common Loon flight seems to be winding down but I was able to tally 228 of the birds flying north to south. Most birds were mid-distance in the scope set at 30X but ~10 birds flew close to shore.
Three Pomarine Jaegers were leisurely flying just offshore and field marks, body shape and flight style were easy to observe. Conveniently, three different plumages were represented; an all-dark bird, a very obvious light adult and what seemed to be an intermediate younger bird. A few minutes later I picked out a light adult Parasitic Jaeger that was mixing it up with some gulls.
