The day started out slow. We found little activity behind the Visitors' Center where we had so much last week. As the sun and temperature rose we had some warblers in the cypresses (Palm, Yellow-rumped, Pine) along with Blue-gray Gnatcatchers -- but in much smaller numbers than last week. It was too cool to check out the butterfly triangle area.

Between the Pavilion area and Cypress stand approaching the boat launch we added Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Black-and-White and Yellow-throated Warblers but not a whole lot more.

Because we heard the distant whinny of a Sora last week, we decided to check the area (NW corner of C8) where we had a single Sora a year or two ago. Unfortunately we came up short. But it put us near where the old blind once stood -- it burned to the ground a while ago. This location turned out to be the highlight of the morning thanks to Eagle-Eye John. Lots and lots of Yellow-rumped Warblers were joined by Pines, female Painted Bunting, and a small flock of American Goldfinch. We tried, unsuccessfully, to pick up more Painted Buntings on the way back to the Marsh Trail parking lot. We had to settle for a Red-shouldered Hawk munching on breakfast instead.

So a slow day turned into the most productive so far this season.

Until next Wednesday,

Rick
