Sorry for the late posting but work has the better of me lately. Even so, my excursion to Tigertail this Sunday was so rewarding that I still have to share it with y'all. Lots of birds in alternate plumage and lots of birds period! I hope some of you can swing by there soon before the lingering ones leave. Nothing most of you haven't seen before but just the sheer beauty makes it a remarkable experience. Okay, enough of the mushy talk, here's what I saw (no number implies several):
Red Knot (4, three of them in alternate plumage)
Marbled Godwit (3, all in alternate)
Whimbrel (2-3)
American Oystercatcher (1)
Willet
Sanderling (most in alternate)
Western Sandpiper
Semipalmated Sandpiper
Least Sandpiper (1)
Dunlin (most in alternate)
Ruddy Turnstone
Semipalmated Plover
Wilson's Plover
Snowy Plover (1)
Black-bellied Plover (most in alternate)
Black Skimmer (a lot)
Least Tern (a lot)
Sandwich Tern (3)
Royal Tern (a lot)
Laughing Gull
Northern Gannet (immature on the beach!)
Brown pelican
Osprey
Double-crested Cormorant
Reddish Egret (3)
A quick stop over at eagle Lakes produced no White-rumped Sandpipers (or Baird's) but did yield the following:
Solitary Sandpiper (2)
Killdeer (1)
Greater Yellowlegs (2)
Black-necked Stilt
Stilt Sandpiper (1 in alternate)
Mottled Duck
Wood Stork
Snowy Egret
Little Blue Heron
Great Egret
Green Heron
Common Moorhen
That's a twenty shorebird species day folks! Not too shabby. And for those of you wondering, I'm at ABA 240 species for the year...and moving. It's getting harder to reach 300 but all the more fun doing it.
Cheers and go out there and bird!
RJ
