Could be either swallows or swifts, but youe reference to bats makes me think they were Chimney Swifts. Also, you mentioned they were chittering. Check out this website for pictures and the call:

: to know if anybody can I.D. the birds I saw. Couldn't have even gotten photos if I tried they were so FAST. All I can describe them as very small and chittering as they were flying I suppose after bugs. It was in a parking lot around palms. I could here sparrows in the palms but these didn't look like sparrows. Very thin pointy wings. Reminded me of bats when they come out at dusk. Know it's a longshot but would anybody have a clue? Thanks!
