Hi Folks,

Andy "The Punk" Bankert and I are planning another Big Day in early June. The route will run from the Tallahassee area to Marathon and then back to South Bay after dark. Sound crazy? Last year we went to Islamorada with time to spare. The year before, I went from Tallahassee to Jacksonville to Marathon with my leg in a splint and 12 stitches from a chainsaw accident just 13 days prior. Oh, to be young again!

But now, as an old married man, I am attempting to reclaim former glories. In doing so, we will be seeking four main target species in the Miami area: Red-whiskered bulbul, White-winged parakeet, Spot-breasted oriole, and Burrowing owl. We have a few old stand-by locations, but we are looking at all options. You never know how these crazy Big Days will turn out.

Miami Shores is our stand-by for White-winged parakeet and Spot-breasted oriole. Both of these can be found unreliably in Kendall where the bulbuls reside. If memory serves, the White-wings often roost at the Baptist Hospital. I have had good success in the late afternoon in summers past.

Kendall-Tamiami Airport is our stand-by for Burrowing owl. I have never been to Opa-Locka Airport, but we may try that this time. I am hoping that we could pick up Spot-breasted oriole and White-winged parakeet in the vicinity of Opa-Locka and then get the bulbul in Kendall and move on to the keys.

Anyway, enough rambling for now. My new bride and I will be starting the honeymoon tonight. We will check on the vireo and flycatcher tomorrow morning, then tool around Miami and the upper keys for the rest of the day before hunting swallows in the keys.

If anyone can provide help with these species, particularly nesting orioles and White-winged parakeet activity, I would appreciate it.

Thanks

David Simpson
