An adult Neotropic Cormorant (NECO) was again observed today at Wakodahatchee Wetlands. This is a different adult NECO than the one I observed there on Dec 1st. The individual observed today had some missing tail feathers and was in active tail molt. It was present on the island nearest the boardwalk where Double-crested Cormorant (DCCO) are nesting. It was aggresive towards other cormorants and was observed detaching twigs. Its wing-waving advertisement display was also observed. The individual of Dec 1st was observed in the north-east part of the wetlands at the other DCCO nesting colony. This second spot requires a scope for best viewing.
Neotropic Cormorants have also been reported from nearby Green Cay and West Delray Park. It seems quite likely that the three Neotropic Cormorants recorded at Wakodahatchee Wetlands from Jan 23rd - Mar 24th 2012 (accepted by FOSRC) have remained in the area and continue to frequent these three locations in Palm Beach Co. It will be interesting to see if they pair with other NECO or with DCCO (as appeared to happen in one case last winter), and if they successfully fledge young.
