Yesterday I arrived at Hugh Taylor Birch State Park at 4:30 PM and immediately heard the LaSagra's Flycatcher exactly where it was being seen in the past few days. The area is in the north side of the park, before the big parking lot, and next to a dirt road that shoots off the side of the main road just as it starts to turn west. There is a sign that says "Staff Only Service Road" or something like that. I was immediately joined by other birders: Lucy from Dallas, John and Irma from Los Angeles with their sister Peggy from Deerfield Beach, and Burt and Haika (I probably misspelled this last one) from St. Augustine. The bird was very active and vocal, working the trees (Seagrape, Blackbead, Gumbo Limbo) and at one point, the highlight, perched on the Blackbead for over ten minutes allowing us to get a couple of scopes on it. Excellent views of it napping, yawning, preening, stretching, and feeding. WOW! I stuck around but the rest of the group left and soon after, Bob Richter showed up. I pointed out the location and he also was able to see/hear the bird. Between this and the Thick-billed Vireo I saw on Saturday with my wife Robin, I'm long overdue for a celebratory libation. Where's Paul B?
Cheers and go find that Bahama Mockingbird,
RJ
