This morning I birded the east portion of Matheson Hammock Park for about 1/2 hour. At about halfway between the restrooms and the south parking lot, I spotted two silent Myiarchus flycatchers in the oaks, mid to upper canopy. Upon further observation of one flycatcher, the field characteristics were right on for Brown-crested Flycatcher: relatively long and dark bill, light grey throat, malar, and chest showing high contrast with crest and neck, and pale yellow starting right below chest. Did not get a good look at second Myiarchus and neither bird vocalized during observation. However, three consecutive "whit" calls were heard a few minutes later in the vicinity.
We had two Brown-crested Flycatchers winter here in 2009-2010. I called Carlos Sanchez and he's all over it.
Bird on!
