The first bird of the Tropical Audubon Society bird walk at Matheson Hammock was a LaSagra's Flycatcher, thanks to the ears and eyes of Dick Cunningham, who heard and saw a Myiarchus flycatcher in the area of the bathroom before the walk started. The bathroom is to the south of the north parking lot, which is just east of the main entrance on Old Cutler Road. The bird was relocated behind the bathroom in some Florida Tremas. For you nostalgic birders, it's in the same area that a Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher was seen in October of 1995. As is typical of LaSagra's the bird will call (whit) for a few minutes and then go silent for about 20 minutes. DeLorme's Page 119 C-1.4.

Other birds of note were a Magnolia Warbler and a Black-whiskered Vireo (heard) on the north nature trail which is on the west side of Old Cutler Rd. Orange-winged Amazons, Yellow-chevroned Parakeets and Hill Mynas were seen in the old nursery area.A post trip to A.D. Barnes Park produced a Swainson's Warbler (also the first bird seen) under the boardwalk on the nature trail. A.D Barnes is at S.W. 40 St. (Bird Rd.) and S.W. 72 Ave. DeLorme's Page 119 B.5-1 Life is good..............
