Numbers picked up this past Wednesday at Loxahatchee. We had 9 people on the walk and 47 total bird species along with multiple butterfly species and 1 otter.

The C-6 impoundment (bordered by the Marsh Trail access road and Lee Road) has very high water levels and much more vegetation than last year and has resulted in few bird sightings. We had our first ducks of the season (Blue-winged Teals) here and an assortment of waders, Gallinules (both Common and Purple), and Coots but in much lower numbers than last year.

We had a quite decent number of little birds around the Visitors' Center including Palm, Pine, Prairie, and FOS Yellow-rumped Warblers, White-eyed and Blue-headed Vireos, large numbers of Blue-gray Gnatcatchers and a very cooperative female Ruby-throated Hummingbird.

While walking the Marsh Trail, we had an assortment of waders but no Snowy, Green, or Cattle Egrets. Overhead we had multiple Northern Harriers and Red-shouldered Hawks with one each Merlin, American Kestrel, and Osprey. A large flock of American Robins returned over and over sometimes lighting in the almost-bare Cypress trees.

Until next Wednesday,

Rick
