A couple of days ago, I saw a large Brown Thrasher perched near a Northern Mockingbird along the entry road to Ft. Zachary Taylor. It was giving periodic loud scold notes which sounded very similar to the chip of a Palm Warbler, except for being more emphatic and much louder. The mockingbird seemed a little agitated, calling back in response to the thrasher. It seemed as though the two feisty guys were having a little argument! I got a very good look at the rich reddish brown back and tail color, as well as the dark breast streaks and yellow iris. It was clearly larger than the mocking bird. It was a nice little surprise, since the Brown Thrasher is not very common in the Keys, and this one was my first Florida sighting. Also, on the rock jetties at the Park beach, there were at least a hundred Sandwich Terns , as opposed to the usual 4 to 8 often perched there at this time of year. They almost looked as though they were getting ready to go on a little group trip!...Ron Hamburger
