This is my first time posting here but have been reading the boar for some time now. I come to you guys with an ID question. I found this Myriarchus flycatcher off of Carrysfoot Circle in Key Largo on Monday, April 25 during mid-morning. Sadly it did not call so I was not comfortable with calling the ID. I want this to be a Brown-crested Flycatcher but I am not comfortable with calling a lifebird when the ID is this tough.
Below is one of the images I took as well as a link to a webpage with another and this description.
My initial impression was that the bird was much paler than what I am used to seeing in Great-crested Flycatchers. I decided I needed to grab a couple images to help with the ID later if it didn't call. While looking at the bird in the viewfinder I also noticed it had a dark base at the bill which would be one vote against Great-crested Flycatcher. This can be seen in the first image. In both images the tertials are difficult to see so I am not sure if they are pale or contrasting. I do know that Paul Bithorn reported seeing two Brown-crested Flycatchers in this area earlier this spring. This would be a lifebird for me and I was not willing to make the call without hearing the bird call.
I would love to know what people with more experience with Brown-crested Flycatchers thought about this bird. Thanks for the help.
