I realize that differentiating between the two species is more often difficult than not. As someone who has seen both in the tropics, I will admit that the call clinches the ID, without thinking twice. However, I believe there are subtle differences which sometimes can be picked up by a photograph (especially by a photograph).
In the case of Larry's first sighting, the bird called, end of story. In the case of this bird, which may well be a second one, I can't help but think TRKI, given the length of the bill. The COKI's bill is just as thick at the base but generally shorter (I am aware of overlap). Unfortunately, the angle of the primaries in this bird does not allow for a good comparison between species (another subtle field mark).
A couple of years ago, the two TRKIs that wintered at Dump Marsh were both vocalizing, thus clinching IDs. Maybe this one will as well.
