I heard a lot of squeaky high-pitched voices in our backyard today starting at 8am, including a rapid TEE-duh-duh X2. It sounded like a chorus in our live oak tree and the nearby thicket of firebush, cinnecord, povonia, & other native shrubs. I saw a male RT hummingbird darting around the live oak plus feeding on the tall firebush. Then I briefly saw a smaller, thinner hummingbird on the firebush but the sunlight was in my eyes. I could hear all the voices for about 30 minutes and walked around the outside of our property on the East side for a different view but never actually saw any more hummingbirds except for the male RT who returned frequently to feed. I could hear the "chorus" across the street to the east in a neighbor's oak tree.
Just now at 9:45am I checked again and saw 3 hummingbirds darting between our live oak and the firebush. Too bad I need to go to work!
We usually see one or two RT hummingbirds for several days in March, September & October & they usually stay for several days in October -- but I've never heard such an excited commotion.
We live in Palmetto Bay, about a mile south of Bill Sadowski park in the Cape Cutler neighborhood near 181st Terrace & 77th Ave.
