Spotting Scope Recommendations

Looking for a suggestion on an affordable priced spotting scope. I'm not looking to spend anything close to the price I paid for my Swarovski binoculars. I also don't want something that will need to be replaced in a year. My wife has given me a cap of $1000, but I would like something even lower if possible. A few Nikon scopes in my price range have good reviews. Has anyone heard of or used Celestron or Alpen?
