As reported in Sun-Sentinel today:
Eight pairs of red-cockaded woodpeckers have made a bewildering trip from Georgia and North Florida to new homes in South Florida. The endangered birds, which have sustained steep declines in the past century from the destruction of mature pine forests, were released Oct. 25 on state-managed lands in western Palm Beach and Martin counties. The birds, which eat ants, beetles, cockroaches, spiders, fruits and berries, were set free on the Dupuis and J.W. Corbett wildlife management areas, in hopes they will establish a thriving population there.
