Cool weather means fallout from the migration. Today we had several pairs of scarlet tanagers and indigo buntings, and all sorts of easy warblers (black poll, black and white, ovenbird, prairie, common yellowthroat, palm, redstarts, northern parula, black-throated blue, northern waterthrush). Resident cardinals, grackles, white-eyes, blue jays, flickers and red-bellies, and the usual seasonal catbirds. These were all seen from the office window today, flitting about the park's native plant nursery. Between the nursery's abundant fresh water and wide diversity of plants with accompanying host-plant specific insects, and an overhead canopy of wild tamarinds in bloom and swarming with insects, the place is a songbird magnet. Cuckoos and black-whiskered vireos are around too, but not yet up to full speed.
