This weekend, I hit Green Cay as usual. Painted buntings continue strong. Kestrels still present. Lots of warbler activity near the entrance almost in the parking lot - northern parula, pine warbler, palm warbler, black and white warbler, all in good numbers. Lots of roseate spoonbills. One American bittern. Sora have come back in large numbers - at least 5 spotted. Blue winged teals filling in more.

Two lesser scaup - something I rarely have seen there. They were at the east end, in the pond between the boardwalk and the back levee, just after the alligator pond and the main path meet again.

Stopped by Pond Hawk Natural Area (Boca Raton) for the first time - it's a stones-throw from my house and only fairly recently opened, so I thought I'd give it a try at a less than optimal time in the mid afternoon. Several kestrels appear to be home there, lots of palm warblers, cardinals, mockingbirds, blue jays, grackles, anhingas, egrets, mottled ducks, pied billed grebes, moorhens, coots, muscovy ducks...I was actually pleasantly surprised at how many birds were there for a newish park even if many were common. Surprisingly, painted buntings were there, despite no feeders that I could see - this is the first time I've spotted them without a feeder in the vicinity - one male flew by, and two females sat long enough to give me some photos of them. There were a few interesting calls too that I didn't recognize, so there may be some surprises there yet. Being as it's less than a mile from my house might explain why I've been seeing kestrel and more raptor activity around my yard than in the past.
