This afternoon between 2:45pm and 3:30pm I came across a nice flock of terns between life guard tower 9 and 11. It had several Royal Terns, a single Sandwich Tern, a single Common Tern and 3 Forster's Tern. Also 3 American Advocet were present. After I left all the birds were still hanging out. From past experiences with Common Terns (I've never had Forster's on Crandon's beach) is they typically flush easy and head straight out to open ocean but none of these birds really moved. If a beach goer came too close they would just move north or south on the beach. Could Sandy have worn these birds out to the point they did not feel comfortable moving on? One of the Forster's seemed to have a fractured leg. I will be out early tomorrow checking for any other worn out migrants.
