Just two individuals joined me for the Beginning Birding walk in Everglades National Park yesterday. We started with great views of the Vermilion Flycatcher at the C-111 canal, looking his resplendent best. At Lucky Hammock, we had Northern Harrier. Anhinga Trail (and, really, the whole park) had the highest water levels I have seen, with riffles in flow areas occasionally resembling mountain streams. An Everglades Racer showed Serpentes style on Research Road, and we saw another large one in the road down near Flamingo. Watched a big Red-bellied Slider cross the road near Mahogany without getting nailed, but sadly saw another one squashed farther south. Flamingo yielded several Roseate Spoonbills, including a really brilliant one at Eco Pond, plus a Merlin. An American Crocodile was hanging out near the bridge at the Flamingo marina.
