Miguel Padura first saw the Red-breasted Nuthatch at A.D. Barnes while the two of us were birding. I identified it seconds later, the bird was next to the little pond with the waterfall. That bird stayed through the winter and delighted many, many "LOCAL" birders. This was during the time when the phone hotlines were in operation. I remember reporting this bird to the person who was running the "Florida" phone hotline his comments were:
" The bird is not a hotline bird because it is common elsewhere"
I was kind of shocked at the response and even reported it again a couple of weeks later. It never made it to the Florida hotline which to this day I find bizarre! Many state birders would have come down to see this bird if only they had know about it!! Boy, things have certainly changed now with the internet!
The bird was pretty easily found anywhere in the pines, it seemed to be calling most of the time which helped to locate it.
