American Bittern at Shark Valley

I'm a (very) beginning birder, but thankfully a park ranger was nearby and pointed out an American Bittern right alongside the paved trail. He said it's very rare. True? When I looked it up on the Internet, it seems this bird has a very wide range, all the way from Canada to South America.
