In the book Florida's Fabulous Mammals (1999), the following description of the Mangrove Fox Squirrel is given:
"Mangrove Fox Squirrels (another subspecies) are found primarily on pine islands in the Big Cypress Swamp area and the mangroves of southwestern Florida. Today they are officially listed as threatened... This subspecies is very rare and hardly ever seen, except on golf courses around Naples, where the squirrels are fed by golfers. Black individuals are more common within the subspecies."
As Carlos mentioned, we both saw a black individual in August of 2008 along the main park road just miles before reaching Flamingo.
