In August of 1992 there was a Red-headed Woodpecker at the Ned Glen Nature Preserve located on s.w. 87 ave. and s.w. 190 st. It may have been present a little earlier than that, perhaps even in July. I saw the bird I believe it was in early August. Hurricane Andrew came roaring through on August 24, 1992. The bird was never seen after that, of course everything south of Kendall had horrible damage, structures, trees etc. etc.
About four years ago? There was a Red-headed Woodpecker in Everglades National Park in the housing area (for park employees)just after the Visitor Center. Another one was reported along the road going to Anhinga Trail about two years ago. Around 1994-1995? there was a male on Garden Key at the Dry Tortugas 70-miles from nowhere!!! I am sure there have been quite a few more from earlier times, as these birds are know to wander.
I have attached a photo of the bird seen today at about 1:00 p.m. by many happy birders! I will post a picture of the happy birders after this post.
