About ten years ago I saw a melanistic Fox Squirrel near the Rowdy Bend Road Trailhead along the main park road and another at the "Indian Mound Bend" about 2/3 of the way down Bear Lake Trail, both of these looked a little scrawny. More recently I saw a normal size brown colored Fox Squirrel along the horse trails at the north end of Picayune Strand. Back in the 1960's Fox Squirrels and a hen turkey came to the entrance chickee at Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary for handouts. At least one of the squirrels was melanistic.
