That would have been 1963 or 1964. Back on the south side of the sunset elementary school play yard there were horses, there was a dogleg in the play yard that extended about 100 feet to the south and about 100 feet or so to the west. There was a pair of them, big white billed woodpeckers shelling the bark off of a dead Dade county pine about midway along the south edge of that dogleg in the vacant lot. I was about 30 feet or less from them. Got in trouble cuz I did not come in from recess on time. Dad said they were likely Pileated but when I looked in the book they were IBWs not Pileated woodpeckers. Was a big surprise.
