As I left the group back to my car, I spotted several blackpoll warblers and a yellow-billed cuckoo. It was a great day.

: A dozen birders joined me for the Matheson Hammock walk on Sat., Apr. 16. We found all the usual warblers fairly quickly: Black-throated blue, Prairie, Black-and-white, Redstart, Worm-eating, plus Blue-heaed vireo. As the group was gathering, we had a noisy flyover by two Blue-and-yellow Macaws. At the pond by the south end of the picnic area, a hyperactive Pied-billed Grebe zoomed around the shallows making a wake like a runaway jet ski.
:
: At the end of the nature trail across Old Cutler, we found both Painted and Indigo Buntings, in addition to Hill Mynas and Black-hooded and Red-masked Parakeets. New York City birder Gretta Lee was extremely pleased to get three lifers within five minutes, when she spotted Pileated Woodpecker, Swallow-tailed Kite and Black Vulture. When the group broke up, I headed to the Wading Beach with my kayak and found a Reddish Egret lurching through the shallows. He got around better than I, as the tide was so low I kept running aground, even 200 yards out.
:
: Interesting herps of the day included a Big-headed Anole basking on a rock fence. Better than this, upon returning home, I encountered an agitated Everglades Racer in my front garden, zooming back and forth across the walk at max speed. Hope he isn't after the Red-Bellied Woodpecker eggs in my nest box.
