The Florida Keys Hawkwatch at Curry Hammock State Park finally surpassed the seasonal world record for Peregrine Falcons tallied during the fall (previously held by Kekoldi, Costa Rica) yesterday. We have tallied 3269 Peregrines to date, well above the Kekoldi high of 3219 from 2004, and we still have a month left of count season! This makes the Florida Keys the Peregrine Falcon Migration Capital of the World!

The composition of migrating songbirds continues changing as the season enters the second half of October. We saw the first Myrtle Warbler of the season today, and Clay-colored and Savannah Sparrows have already been seen. Scissor-tailed Flycatchers have started showing up, and Swainson's Hawks are already a daily event. A highlight for the season was a Bullock's Oriole found at Long Key State Park this morning. It was seen, sketched and photographed during a brief period, but was not relocated during several searches throughout the day. For a full report click on the Florida Keys Hawkwatch link.
