Just saw what appeared to be two rufous hummingbirds (?large orange sphynx moths)flying in tandem about 12 feet high with wing tips about 1 inch apart. Then a ruby-throated hummingbird suddenly appeared and zoomed in between them, but was chased off. They flew over our house from north to south at about 4pm.
Is this typical hummingbird behavior? I've never seen a rufous in our yard, wish I could give more info to help ID.
I've been home today and have enjoyed watching an RT hummingbird on our firebush, povonia & perching on a twig of our live oak. Every year we are visited by 2 or 3 RTs every March and September or October. They usually hang around for 2-3 weeks.
We live about a mile south of Sadowski.
