i was very impressed this spring seeing a flock of 60 white pelicans flying low overhead in palm beach county, it struck me that i had never seen as large a flock of anything that size in the air in south florida. i bested that while driving in manatee county yesterday, on i75 at mm 233, i saw a much larger flock of at least 150 pelicans wheeling around just over the highway. i pulled over and watched them for awhile, as did quite a few other motorists. while we watched, another flock almost as large flew in and joined the first. i know white pelicans are no big deal, but they are impressivly large on the wing, and i don't know that in 40 years of florida birding i have ever seen anything close to this in sheer spectacle. an amazing sight. kd
