If anyone visited Crandon Beach this summer, you noticed a cordoned area to encourage nesting Least Terns. Rangel Diaz, a naturalist at Crandon Park, was responsible for getting approval for the project and building it. Even more recently, Rangel expanded the area with permanent posts, rope and signs, in the hope of attracting roosting shorebirds.

Today on high tide there was proof that Rangel's perseverance is a success. There were no roosting shorebirds on the south section of the beach - they were all inside "Rangel's Roost!" There were 29 Piping, 2 Wilson's and many Semipalmated Plovers, 4 Least Sandpipers and many Sanderlings. Father north along the beach were 1 Herring, 1 Great Black-backed and 24 Lesser Black-backed Gulls.

Congratulations, Rangel!
