Hello,

Swallow-tailed Kites apparently nested successfully
in Broward Co. last spring. I believe that this is the first nesting of this species in Broward Co. While working on the Breeding Bird Atlas several years ago, Jocie Baker found kites along the Broward/Collier border, however, I suspect that the actual nests sites were in Collier Co.
We would need to review her data cards to
determine where nests were found.
Last spring/early summer up to 6 Swallow-tailed
Kites were seen in the area of SW 148 Ave. and
Sterling Rd. in SW Broward Co. They were present
for at least 2 mos. in that area.

On March 11, 2002 Jim Harris observed two
kites in the same area where they were present
last year. They have been seen on a regular basis
by residents in that area since that date. The
birds were not noted by residents prior to last
spring.

I was able to observe two birds in this neighborhood
this evening between 5:10 and 5:45. One was perched
in an Australian Pine. No nest has been located as
of this time.

Thanks to Jim Harris for posting information on
these birds.

Questions: Are there any nesting sites for Swallow-
tailed Kites in eastern Dade Co. north of A.D. Barnes?
When did the kites first nest at A.D. Barnes?
