Hey all,

This past weekend was just awesome at The Cape!  We had to work the entire weekend which kept us from posting so sorry for the late report.

Saturday started out with a nap in the No Name Harbor parking lot as we waited for the rains to cease. The rain would eventually stop around 9:00am, as soon as we got out of the car we could hear lots of Ovenbirds and Black-throated Blues among many others.  We knew it was going to be a good day. We ended up seeing 19 species of warbler, a Black-billed Cuckoo and a few other goodies.

Here is Saturday's migrant  list:
Great Blue Heron
Great Egret
Osprey
Broad-winged Hawk
White-crowned Pigeon
Yellow-billed Cuckoo
BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO - 1 juvenile bird
Chuck-will's-widow
Acadian Flycatcher
Great Crested Flycatcher
Red-eyed Vireo
Barn Swallow
Swallow sp.
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher
Tennessee Warbler
Northern Parula
Yellow Warbler
Chestnut-sided Warbler
Magnolia Warbler
Cape May Warbler
Black-throated Blue Warbler
Blackburnian Warbler
Prairie Warbler
Palm Warbler
CERULEAN WARBLER -1 female seen well
Black-and-white Warbler
American Redstart
Prothonotary Warbler
Worm-eating Warbler
Swainson's Warbler
Ovenbird
Northern Waterthrush
Common Yellowthroat

Sunday was even better than Saturday with new birds arriving overnight. Diversity picked up and thrushes were all over the park. In general an increase of warblers was evident as we're raptors in the skies.

Here is a list of Sunday's migrants:
Great Blue Heron
Great Egret
Osprey
MISSISSIPPI KITE - 1 adult male, contrasting head/black tail
Northern Harrier
Sharp-shinned Hawk
Cooper's Hawk
Broad-winged Hawk
American Kestrel
Merlin
Peregrine Falcon
Yellow-billed Cuckoo
BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO - presumably the same bird
Eastern Wood-Pewee
Acadian Flycatcher
Northern Rough-winged Swallow
Barn Swallow
swallow sp.
Tennessee Warbler
Northern Parula
Chestnut-sided Warbler
Magnolia Warbler
Cape May Warbler
Black-throated Blue Warbler
Black-throated Green Warbler
TOWNSEND'S WARBLER-yellow on throat and breast as well as darkness of auriculars and crown, lack of yellow on vent also helped separate from Black-throated Green and Blackburnian Warbler the only other two warblers with extensive yellow on the face that could be confused for a Townsend's Warbler.
Blackburnian Warbler- awesome male retaining much of its breeding plumage.
Yellow-throated Warbler
Prairie Warbler
Palm Warbler
Black-and-white Warbler
American Redstart
Worm-eating Warbler
Swainson's Warbler
Ovenbird
Northern Waterthrush
Common Yellowthroat
Summer Tanager
Scarlet Tanager

The total of number of warbler species seen at The Cape last week was an impressive 23 species, one other species was banded, bringing up the total to 24 species.  BTW the banded bird was a Mourning Warbler!

This upcoming Saturday 9/29, Mariel and I will be leading birders on a walk through the park. Come out an enjoy the beauty of Bill Baggs Cape FL SP with the "Nature is Awesome" duo, we will see birds, butterflies, reptiles and much more!
