Fifteen birders joined me this morning for Tropical Audubon Society s Birdwalk through Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden and later to Matheson Hammock. We started with the sounds of Bobolinks high overhead. We then had a mixed flock outside the main entrance that included Northern Parula Warbler, Prairie Warbler, and Yellow-throated Vireo. We added more species along the Kushlan Bird Trail (KBT) with the highlight of the day being a Kentucky Warbler just between the Lisa Anness Butterfly Garden and the Overlook. All 15 birders were able to sit and observe this usually secretive bird for minutes as it foraged, grappled with a worm, jumped for insects under leaves, and hopped around the underbrush. Also exciting were the Lousiana Watertrushes that would circle the group numerous times only allowing brief looks. In the Hawk Zone we has three soaring overhead, both dark & light phase Short-tailed Hawks and a Cooper s Hawk. In the Hummingbird Zone and throughout the Garden it was good to see the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds back in South Florida. At Matheson we chased the Bell s Vireo but were unsuccessful. A great day was had by all. A pitcher or two of Longboard quenched our thirst as we celebrated the Kentucky Warbler.
