Twelve birders joined me for today s TAS trip to Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary in Collier County and Bunche Beach in Lee County. On our way to Corkscrew via Snake Road (CR 833) and Immokalee Road (CR 846), we encountered four separate flocks of Wild Turkey, including a flock of six behind the service station at Snake Road and I-75 in Broward County. Other species spotted along the way included Black-bellied Whistling-Duck, Blue-winged Teal, Snail Kite, Bald Eagle, Crested Caracara (13), Limpkin, Sandhill Crane and Pileated Woodpecker.
Only a handful of migrants were found at Corkscrew, including Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Eastern Wood-Pewee, Empidonax sp. (likely Acadian from the field marks seen), Eastern Kingbird, Red-eyed Vireo, Ovenbird, Black-and-white, Prothonotary and Yellow-throated Warblers and Northern Parula. Residents tallied included Red-shouldered Hawk, Limpkin, Barred Owl, Pileated Woodpecker, Great Crested Flycatcher, White-eyed Vireo, Tufted Titmouse, Brown-headed Nuthatch (heard), Carolina Wren and Pine Warbler.
At Bunche Beach, we easily found the Long-billed Curlew that had been reported from this location in recent weeks. Also seen were Reddish Egret, Roseate Spoonbill, Black-bellied, Snowy, Wilson s, Semipalmated and Piping Plovers, Willet, Marbled Godwit, Ruddy Turnstone, Red Knot, Sanderling, Western and Least Sandpipers, Short-billed Dowitcher, Forster s, Royal and Sandwich Terns and Black Skimmer.
