I had a surprise sighting this morning while heading towards my car. Four noisy fledgling Nutmeg Mannikins with bright gape lines were being fed by a pair of doting parents. A small flock of these birds has been hanging around my neighborhood for the past three summers, but this is the first time I've seen breeding.

Everglades National Park -- Chekika was beautiful today, with the nice morning weather and constant stream of migrating Eastern Kingbirds heading off to the north (!?). Many trees and snags contained multiple birds all along the stretch of road north and south of the first (and only) intersection, with many more flying overhead. Scanning with my binoculars off into the distance, one could make out even more birds perched on snags. I managed to pull out a Gray Kingbird out of all the Easterns. Other notable species for this location included a Prairie Warbler on the side of the road near the abandoned fruit grove, two Red-tailed Hawks perched on the dead Casuarinas on the way out, and a Common Nighthawk perched on a snag near the hawks.
