The most interesting birds seen on a day trip to Everglades National Park to Flamingo were an Orchard Oriole at Flamingo, three Broad-winged Hawks soaring over the entrance to Snake Bight Road, a Prothonotary Warbler at Mahogany Hammock, and two or three Louisiana Waterthrushes at Royal Palm Hammock. Barn Swallows were present in good numbers all through the park and I was able to pick out two or three Bank Swallows.
Eastern Kingbirds were also seen all through the park but mostly as singles with only a few very small flocks. Prairie Warblers and Blue-gray Gnatcatchers were the only migrant songbirds found in any numbers along with a few American Redstarts, Ovenbirds, and Northern Waterthrushes. The usual Shorebirds, Gulls, and Terns were also found in small numbers.
There was little evidence of damage at Flamingo from the storm surge last weekend and that was from a little bay water washing over the bank east of the Walk-in Camping area. Water levels were high in the freshwater areas and the back country and moderately high south of the main park highway.
