Birded Matheson Hammock Park today, where the day started off with several parrot species making their morning commute overhead -- Red-masked Parakeet (17), Yellow-chevroned Parakeet (just one), and Orange-winged Parrot (2). Common Hill Mynas were also present and actively calling. A surprise Belted Kingfisher made an appearance, flying high overhead towards the south.
Migrant activity was pretty good for the first of September, with small flocks scattered throughout the park. Two Swainson's Warblers were the best -- one along the service road and the other right at the main entrance to the picnic area of the park. Both were very confiding and gave good views. A Traill's Flycatcher at the western extremity of the park gave very brief views and got away before I could workout the ID.
Here is the migrant tally for the park:
Traill's (Alder/Willow) Flycatcher
Great Crested Flycatcher: 3 (passage migrants)
Gray Kingbird: 2 (only a passage migrant in the hammock area of the park)
Red-eyed Vireo: 4
Yellow-throated Vireo
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher: 17
Ovenbird: 3
Swainson's Warbler: 2
Worm-eating Warbler: 5
Northern Parula: 7
Yellow-throated Warbler: 2
Prairie Warbler: 4
American Redstart
Black-and-white Warbler
